I am excited to be contributing to the new EFCE Section on AI for Chemical Engineering (AI4CE) of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. The section aims to connect, support and inform the EFCE community in the responsible and impactful adoption of AI in chemical and process engineering, with a strong focus on industrial applications, research coordination, training and education, and evidence-based policy.

I recently took part in the section’s first steering committee meeting at the University of Almería 🇪🇸. The two days covered:

🔬 Research: what good AI research in chemical engineering looks like, how academia can support industry, and the need for shared benchmarks and datasets so results are reproducible across groups.

🎓 Education: how training and teaching can keep pace with an AI landscape that is changing faster than university curricula.

These questions are close to the heart of our work at LOOPS, from data-efficient and physics-informed machine learning to LLM-assisted modelling, and I look forward to bringing our perspective to the section’s activities.
